1. Introduction

Hilla Community Centre in Malaysia has an annual program named ‘Hilla Peace Camp’. The focus of Peace Camp is centered on peace building and empowering children/teenagers to get motivation about their own lives and to envision future lives. Since the first Hilla Peace Camp in 2008, the students have developed a deeper concern and awareness about others in daily life. Through art-work, games, play and many fun activities the children are challenged to develop deeper motivation with themselves and others around them.

In Peace Camp, we are willing to invite various different groups in race, religion and nationality. It gives a chance to recognize ourselves that we are all neighbors to each other. We can be different and better than what we were before. For that reason, we plan to conduct this program to connect with refuge students, stimulate them to be actively involved in school and encourage them to overcome their tough circumstances.

2. What Hilla School is?

Hilla Community Center (School) is a place for some of the many refugees in Malaysia awaiting to resettle in other countries. The focus of Hilla is to provide refugee children with basic education, as refugees are not allowed in public schools. Hilla also helps refugee children get ready for challenges when they resettle. Currently, there are approximately 100 students. Hilla School wants to be a welcoming place to meet students where they are and to become a second home.
